What volume does a 5 gram packet of water crystals fill?


The 5 gram packet of crystal soil expands to fill a volume of approx. 1000ml when soaked in water for 10 hours. People are amazed by the huge expansion of the water crystals and often ask about the volume produced by a single 5 gram (0.18 ounces) packet so it is illustrated here in a measuring jug. The result can be used as a guide for selecting the number of packets needed to decorate a flower vase or candle holder etc. Measure the volume of the vase and divide by 1000ml to give the number of packets required. Note that 1000ml is only an estimate and the actual volume may vary a little between lots.

Soaking a 5 gram packet of water crystals (size medium)

The 5 gram packet of water crystals will expanded to fill a volume of over 800ml when soaked in water. It is suggested to fill a container with roughly 1 liter of water for each packet used and to soak the water crystals for over 11 hours. The water crystals will continue to expand for many hours. After two hours the crystals have expanded to a floating volume of roughly 500ml, and after 11 hours they expanded to a floating volume of roughly 800ml.

Straining off the remaining water shows that the water crystals fill a volume of over 800ml.
